History

Not only do I get to watch most UH games for free. But I get to be a part of sports history as well.  Those times in sports where you know where you were exactly when those events happened.  This past week UH softball junior Kelly Majam hit her 45th career home run, which is now the record for all time career home runs.  Congratulations to Kelly and hope her record is not broken for a very long time.  UH faced San Jose State in a 3 game series.  UH won Friday night and Saturday would be a double-header that would be split.  In the first game UH would lose 2-4 but in the second game UH would come back with a vengeance.  Stephanie Ricketts would pitch this game and UH would win 8-0 in the 6th inning.  It was in this game that Majam would break the record and Ricketts would pitch a no-hitter.  It was a great game that I will remember forever.

Is there a game in your life that you will never forget for the rest of your life?

Hell week

This week has been the hardest week of work that I ever had (so far). I had 4 days in a row of softball, men's volleyball, and then an early baseball game.

Softball was pretty good because the game moves quickly.  What I didn't know is that after 7 innings they put a runner on second in every inning in order to move the game along.  Personally I think that's a little sexist because in baseball when you go into extra innings they still play the game regularly.  But that's just an opinion, I have never played baseball so I guess I really wouldn't know.  But there were great games nonetheless.  One game went 10 innings but it was all worth it to watch one of the players hit a home run in the bottom of the 10th to win it all (see link below)

( walk off home run, footage not from OC Sports broadcast)

Volleyball was interesting because on Friday night #11 Hawaii battled #4 BYU in a 5 set showdown with BYU eventually coming out victorious. Their 4th set finished off 36-34. An epic match that was never televised.  So surly you would think that the next night (the game that was actually televised) would be another epic match.  This was not the case however as BYU swept Hawaii.  In the very first set Hawaii lost 25-12.

In baseball UH had a 4 game series with the Dons of the University of San Francisco (USF).  By the time we televised their last game UH was already up in the series 2-1.  In the top of the 9th, UH was up 3-2, but USF had 2 runners on base with 2 outs.  UH was able to get the last batter out as he grounded to first and was able to get the last out.  Just like the rest of the series, the game was back and forth all the way to the end

It makes me wonder do all athletes wait for the camera to bring out the best in them? If your reading this and are a former athlete who's been on TV, has knowing that your gonna be on TV ever bothered you?

Working through it all

This week I had quite a busy schedule on my hands.  From Tuesday through Saturday I worked mornings at KITV, went to class, and then worked a game with OC Sports.  I was lucky/unlucky enough to be able to not always do these things back to back.
On the bright side I was able to make a very nice paycheck coming up.  On the downside I missed class on Thursday because my car battery died on me and cost me a little less than about one days worth of pay.
I have one more week of this hectic schedule lets see how this all goes.

3 days, 2 losses, 1 win, and a goodbye

This week I had the honor and privilege to watch some great baseball and basketball games.

On Thursday (3/1) was the UH mens basketball team going up against Idaho.  That game to say the least was bad.

Friday (3/2) is when things started to get interesting.  I worked my very first UH baseball game.  I do not watch baseball, I know the basics but not like I know football.  This was a big challenge for me because I did not know what to expect in baseball.  I realized that once you 'switch' a baseball game, you can 'switch' any sport that's out there.  Baseball is a fast and slow game at the same time.  If your not attentive things can happen in a split second and that could make all the difference in whether your get called for another job or not.  UH was able to win the match 2-1 with the game being decided by Freshman Kaeo Aliviado's solo HR in the 6th inning.  It was a great game, even for a person who doesn't like watching baseball

Saturday (3/3) was a very special night for the UH mens basketball team.  It was senior night and also it was the very last WAC basketball game that would ever be played in the Stan Sheriff Center.  For two players it would also be the last time that they ever suited up in a UH mens basketball jersey as a player.  It was a little scary in the beginning because Utah State lead for a significant amount of time.  UH came back and took the lead but then lost it with 7 secs to go.  It was a disappointing loss but still a great game.  The best part about the night was the senior goodbye.  At the end of the game they would call the names of the 2 seniors leaving the basketball program and each would get to take their last shot at the hoop all to bruddah iz's 'what a wonderful world'.  It was a great ending to a not so great night.  I wish the two seniors the best in their future endeavors and in life as well.
