light week

This week wasnt so bad.  I only worked 2 games on the sports side and a couple of nights on the news side.  I havent worked on a high school sports game since last year.

On the news side I find it so disheartening to hear stories of tragedies that happen all over the state, nation, and world.  But I think to myself that if we didnt report those kinds of stories, we would not be doing our job as a news station and let everyone go on thinking that everything is perfect with the world and nothing bad could ever happen.  The sad truth is that there are bad things and bad people that effect us all and its our job to be the bearer of bad news.

What do you like/hate about television newscasts?

This week I was able to witness the UH baseball team play against Fresno St.  The game that I had worked on was not particularly exciting.  It seemed as though UH had the game all wrapped up but then in the 8th inning all it took was one pitch to send everything rolling downhill, and boy did it create the snowball effect.  UH ended up losing the game 5-3.  I think what makes it more depressing is the fact that I am a UH fan and its hard to watch your favorite team lose.  But when I worked the next night I would not have this problem.

On Saturday I was able to work on OC16 and their coverage of OIA/ILH softball double-header.  The great thing about this night was that I had no favorites so all I cared about was watching a great softball game and I got it!  The first game was between Mililani and Campbell.  This game went scoreless all the way until the 6th inning.  Then in the bottom of the 6th Mililani was able to score 4 runs with 3 runs being brought in by a HR.  It was a very exciting game that I thoroughly enjoyed watching probably because I had no favorites in the game.

The second game was an ILH match up between Iolani and Kamehameha-Kapalama.  From the very beginning it was exciting.  Iolani was able to score 4 runs in the first inning and 1 in the second.  However Kamehameha was able to come back and score 3 runs in the third inning and 1 in the fourth.  but that was as far as Kamehameha was able to take it as neither team was able to score after that and Kamehameha lost by 1 point.

Both games were very exciting to watch and made me realize why we all love watching high school sports so much.
